First of all what is a Motorsailer? There are various descriptions of motorsailers today. In the Eastern Mediterranean, Motorsailers, or Motor/Sailers are known to be Gulets; otherwise referred to as Turkish yachts. This type of vessel is generally 50/50, meaning 50% sail powered and 50% motor powered. Depending on the size and build, they can be ocean-crossers, if sturdy enough in many aspects. But because gulets are handmade wooden boats, the rigging can vary from one gulet to the other. So therefore not all are 50/50, and can be 30/70, etc.
Motorsailers are designed to be comfortable for extensive cruising. These Turkish gulets are built of wood, strongly framed, and powered with big heavy engines that run on diesel. However, they can slightly be compromised in sailing ability where they may not power at high speeds. But gulets do sail when they are out at sea. During motorsailer charters, gulets sail 3 to 4 hours per day during a weeks’ period – it depends on the wind any one particular day.
